Description:  Well, there was so much activity I just jumped off the train and started taking pictures. She who must be obeyed advised that in future, I should at least move our lugguage out of frame before taking any pictures. From left to right, a Class 800 commuter, a Class 2800(?) short distance train set, our luggage, a Class 8600/8700 intercity train set, and a Class 4000 "Koploper" train set.

Description:  Two joined "Koploper" intercity trains pass over a canal as they pull into Utrecht Centraal Station. Note the bicycles in the foreground (right). In addition to efficient railway and bus systems, the Dutch have set aside extensive right-of-ways for bicycle and pedestrian traffic. We never even thought about renting a car while we were there.

Description:  As recently arrived passengers sort themselves out on the platform, two joined "Koploper" intercity train sets rest on Utrecht Centraal Station track (spoor) #11. The Koploper ("head walker" or more properly, "front runner") was designed so that passengers could move between joined train sets (note the doors under the driver's [engineer's] compartment). Apparently, this design feature never worked very well, and the doors between train sets are now permanently sealed.
